Thrilling finish in New Zealand T20 tournament

Kane Williamson returned to form with an eye-catching 118 before his bowlers suffocated India’s middle order in a defence of a modest total of 242 as New Zealand inflicted a six-run defeat upon the hosts in a thrilling final over finish in the second game of the five-match One-Day International series at the Feroz Shah Kotla in New Delhi on Thursday (October 20). New Zealand survived a stunning lower-order rearguard from Hardik Pandya, who scored a 32-ball 36 in a 49-run stand for the ninth wicket with Umesh Yadav, to bowl the hosts out with three balls to spare, as an almighty hush descended on the famous stadium.

New Zealand’s disciplined bowling efforts, led by Trent Boult (2 for 25) and the thrifty returns for the two left-arm spinners, Anton Devcich and Mitchell Santner, had left India at an unenviable 183 for 8. Umesh joined forces with Pandya after Martin Guptill’s double-strike appeared to have knocked the stuffing out of the chase.

The duo ticked off singles before boundaries begin to fly as a finicky New Zealand outfit lost its bowling disciplines for the first time in the game, reducing the target to a gettable 11 from 8.Then Boult inflicted the hammer blow when he had Pandya caught expertly at deep point by Mitchell Santner with a short delivery before Tim Southee wrapped up the innings by castling No. 11 Jasprit Bumrah, thereby levelling the series 1-1.
